I don’t think we will get a clear answer as to how South Africa actually has and will benefit in the long-term. Politicians will paint it as a glorious triumph to justify their next Mercedes MLK650.
I heard either fantastic reports from businesses or the opposite. Did it assist in narrowing the gap between the poor and wealthy, don’t think so, fat cats get fat off the poor.
2010 FIFA World Cup, what does it mean for South Africa?
This was my question prior to the World Cup and below was my impression of what the World cup meant.
Just what does the world cup mean to you as a South African?
- The chance to fleece tourists
- An opportunity to show the international community what SA is about
If South Africa does not make 1c from the 2010 FIFA World Cup but the world comes away with a positive impression of our abilities, hospitality and friendliness – we will have won.
It seems to me that the focus is primarily on making money.
Create a poor impression and it’ll take years to recover the loss.
It’s a great moment for South Africa to shine – or for all the lights to go out. [Which seems rather likely at the moment with Eskom's track record.]
