Stormy Hill Horse TrailsLocation: South Africa » Kwazulu Natal » Drakensberg » Southern Drakensberg » BostonHorse trails for beginners and experienced ridersDescriptionThe Riding Area
The trails we'll be taking run mainly through forested plantations. Wildlife that you may see on the trail includes Samango Monkeys, Vervet Monkeys and small buck deer (Duiker, Mountain Reedbuck, Grey Rhebok, Bushbuck).
Serval cats, Caracal Lynx, Porcupines and Bush Pig live out here but are rather more elusive.
I've had an Eland walk down my hill but that's quite unusual this far down. There's a real abundance of bird life around, we're on the birding route.
The Horses
With me, Caroline, on a lead horse I can take between one and five people out on rides. My horses are:
Fergie: used for beginners or advanced riders
River: used for advanced riders usually as my lead horse
J.D.: used for beginners or advanced riders
Macy: used for beginners or advanced riders - small horse so light adults and children only
Misty: used for beginners or advanced riders - small horse so light adults and children only
Gulliver: used for beginners or advanced riders - large shire/percheron horse so heavier adults on slower and shorter rides
All my other horses are youngsters that can't be ridden yet.
Booking is required so the horses can be prepared. They have about 50 hectares of steep hill to graze on so they are not always available at short notice.
Meals
I don't provide food but you are welcome to bring your own if you fancy a picnic. Sorry, no camping stoves, cigarettes or open flames allowed as we are riding on forestry property.
Equipment
Riding hats are recommended. I have a selection to choose from if riders don't have their own. You'll need comfortable walking shoes as there are areas where we have to lead the horses up or down steep paths.
The forest can get quite cold so a light jacket or sweatshirt is handy. Sunscreen is good on those hot days.
Useful Info
This is a trail ride so riders need to be prepared to lead and hold horses where necessary.
The horses have all been picked for their sensible natures. The pace of the ride is dependant on the ability of the riders, the weather and ground conditions.
An indemnity is provided for all riders to sign.
